A detailed atlas of stars in both northern and southern hemispheres showing variable, binary, clusters, and nebula of magnitudes -3 to 6 (Flamsteed scale). It also incorporates the work of both Schlesinger and Prager. Produced at a time of great change in astronomy: the changeover from observations of the solar system as object to examining the stars for their own sake and understanding their actions. The period also benefits from new instrumentation and sophisticated mathematical processing of recorded images. See Pannekoek, chapters 39 & 40.
