By Laennec, Merie'dec (Sharpe, James B) - HEART SOUNDS
New York: Samuel Wood & Sons, 1832. First American Edition.. Original (?) publisher's half linen backed boards.. Good; spine cloth somewhat abraded through rodent nibble; light tide mark throughout.. 12mo, [6 - adverts], xviii (includes frontispiece), [1] - 120 pp. + frontispiece.

One of the earliest works on the stethoscope - after Stokes in 1825 - and heart sounds in diagnosing serious cardiac disease. A handful of articles, or "reviews", appeared in the French medical literature within the first year or so after Laennec published his milestone work. These, however, did not receive wide circulation and therefore had little impact on medical practice of the day. It was the work of Laennec's cousin in 1824 that Sharpe used as the basis for his published remarks offered here. It precedes the publication of Barth & Rogers on heart sounds by 13 years. Rare in trade. Bedford #477 - only a much later printing; see Kligfield Collection Duke Univ. under Stokes (#1108).
