Top edges gilt. Previous owners inscription on the right front flyleaves. Volume I has damp staining to the early pages including the title page. Light toning and scattered foxing to both volumes. Covers are worn and faded. Leather is rubbed along the corners, edges and joints. Front hinges cracked. Volume II has a crudely tipped in letter on the rear paste down from William Downing letterhead (De "Chaucer's head" Library, 74, New Street, Birmingham) dated February 24, 1885 and addressed to Charles Twamley? Swamley? regarding a question of drawings issued in a certain book.
