London: Macmillan and Co., 1876. First edition. INSCRIBED BY CARROLL on half-title page, "Mrs. Bell/ from the Author./ Mar. 29, 1876." Rebound in early 20th century binding by Roycrofter Lorenz Schwartz of 12mo full blue leather with gilt-stamped nautical designs on both covers; gilt-ruled turn ins; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; and covers and spine from the original, gilt-stamped deep blue cloth binding bound in at rear. [There were reportedly only 20 copies "in dark blue and gold" cloth ordered by Carroll for personal use per Williams, Madan, Green & Crutch, 89]. Bindery stamp of Zahn Bindery to lower front turn in, and stylized initials of Lorenz Schwartz to lower rear. Bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes Ingalls to front pastedown. Offsets from turn-ins to free endpaper edges; faint offset from item previously laid in to blank verso of dedication leaf (appears to have been binding notations); illustrations, tissue guards, and opposing pages slightly tanned. Otherwise, altogether nearly fine.
