By ROOSEVELT, THEODORE
np: np, 1907. framed. Fine. Beautiful photograph signed and inscribed by Roosevelt as president: “To / Mrs. Edgar D. Crumpacker / with the regards of / Theodore Roosevelt / Mar 6th 1907”. A rich, warm-toned image of Roosevelt, sitting in profile, looking magisterial. Beneath the image, on the original matte, Roosevelt has presented the photo to Charlotte Ann Lucas Crumpacker (“Mrs. Edgar D. Crumpacker”). The Crumpacker’s were very active politically – Edgar Crumpacker served eight terms in Congress (1897 - 1913) as a Republican representative from Indiana and notably was part of Roosevelt’s 1905 inaugural committee. He is best known for introducing and championing the Crumpacker Bill – an attempt to fight the widespread suppression of the African American vote in the southern states. (The bill, unfortunately, did not pass.) The recipient, Charlotte Crumpacker, was one of the founders of the Congressional Club, a society, founded by Congressional charter in 1908 for spouses of elected officials to “facilitate bi-partisan efforts, raise awareness of and support charities, and provide educational enrichment” (Congressional Club Mission Statement).

Although this is a studio photo, the photographer has not been identified and it appears to be quite rare – we cannot find other examples that have been offered for sale.

Size: Image = approx. 6.5 x 9 inches. Sight with matte = 8 x 11 inches. Very handsomely framed with descriptive plaque beneath the image to an overall size of approx. 18 x 21 inches. Evidence of matte burn, image fine, inscription and signature strong.
