Columbia, NY: P. Dean Carrique, Printer, 1830. Very Good. 20 x 12 cm. sheet of paper. Modest browning. "Recognizance. Columbia County, ss. Be it Remembered, That on the 17 day of June 1830 came before me James Kent, Esq. Justice of the Peace in and for said county Columbia New York Insp. and acknowledged - sel - indebted to the People of the State of New York, in the sum of $25. Dollars, under condition that if he shall personally appear at the next Session in fact to be holden on the 24th day of June in and for the County of Columbia, then and there to give evidence in behalf of the People of the State of New-York, against Robert Adams, vagrant Negro & Quadroon -- this Recognizance will be void, otherwise to remain in full force. and unlawful & wilfull neglect. Taken and acknowledged before me this 18 day of June 1830 (?) Justice." On upper corner of verso "Robert Adams Abandonment In Contemptus. We wonder if Mr. Adams could possibly have been the Robert Adams who was credited as the author of "The Narrative of Robert Adams: An American Sailor Who Was Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa, in the Year 1810" which waspublished in London in 1816 with an American edition the following years. The narrative is generally regarded as fabricated and Adams pretty much disappears into the mists.
