Cloth rubbed along edges of spine and corners of covers. Text remains clean. Newspaper clippings affixed to second free endpaper. Includes a clipped signature from John Greenleaf Whittier pasted to front free endpaper. Inscription reads: "To D. Bethune Duffield from his friend John G. Whittier 8th mo. 14 1879." Additional handwritten letter affixed to front flyleaf from Whittier to a "friend." Divie Bethune Duffield (1821-1891) was a Detroit lawyer, fellow poet, and friend to John Greenleaf Whittier.
