Apparently, the town's first Congregational Church was established in 1893.Ruth Emma Goodsell (1893 - 1988) was the author of "California during the war of independence, 1810-1822," and daughter of pioneer preacher and one of the early pastors in Murphys, California Dennis Goodsell (1850 - 1937). Ruth had written on the back wrap of the book that she had been baptized by her father in Murphys in 1894 and had included a short prayer.
