By Andersen, Hans Christian
London: Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, 1875. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover. Like the moonlit fairy gracing its covers, this turn-of-the-century collection of fairy tales is sure to sweep you off your feet and into worlds full of magic and adventure. This beautifully and bountifully illustrated edition collects over 150 beloved fairy tales by the great Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875), the writer of novels, poems, travelogues, plays, and, of course, such enduring stories as "The Little Mermaid,” “Thumbelina," "The Snow Queen," and "The Ugly Duckling," all of which are presented here, along with less familiar but just as treasurable tales, fully illustrated in 100 enchanting engravings, including full-page plates, vignettes, chapter headings, tailpieces, and decorative initials throughout.

8 5/8" X 6". xxxii, 525pp, plus two pages of ads. Bound in deep blue cloth over bevelled boards, with the figure of moonlit and star-spangled fairy stamped in green, gilt, white, and black to upper board, two smaller fairies stamped in kind to spine, and both lettered in black and gilt over green. Rather heavy wear to binding, with rubbing to edges, hard bumping to extremities, bubbling to cloth, and lean to spine. Inner hinges show signs of amateur glue repair after cracking; binding remains quite firm and sound, though endpapers show unsightly tears. Small square of blue paper to front free endpaper, with old price and small blue spot to verso. Gift inscription to verso of title page ("A present—to Winnie, From Fred." Foxing to pages throughout, with occasional smudge, else unmarked. Illustrated in 100 engravings throughout.
