Originally published in 1590, "Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarium" gives a striking and pictorial description of Palestine, of the antiquities of Jerusalem, and a chronology from Adam till the death of John the Apostle in 109. This work is complete with the following 14 folded maps and plans: 1) Map of the Promised Land; 2) Map of Egypt; 3) Tribe of Asher; 4) Tribe of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Dan; 5) Tribe of Gad; 6) Tribe of Zebulun, Issachar, and Manasseh; 7) Tribe of Judah; 8) Tribe of Manasseh; 9) Tribe of Nephthalim; 10) Desert of Pharan; 11) Tribe of Reuben; 12) Tribe of Simeon; 13 and 14) Large plan of Jerusalem in two separate plates (first part with 5-inch closed tear; second with 2-inch tear; both plates somewhat rumpled at the gutters). Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges of binding. Slight discoloration along front joint. Moderate scratching to covers. Contemporary previous owner's inscription and signature on upper margin of title (not affecting lettering). Pages age-toned along edges, with sporadic closed tears. Minor and sporadic worming and water-staining along lower margin of a few pages (not affecting text or plates). 4" closed tear at lower margin of first plate. Contemporary previous owner's inscription at verso of 2 plates (not affecting image). Text in Latin. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in good- to good, plates in good to very good condition. About the author: Christian Kruik van Adrichem, or Christianus Crucius Adrichomius, (1533-1585) was a Catholic priest and theological writer. Van Adrichem was born in Delft. He was ordained in 1566, and was Director of the Convent of St. Barbara in Delft before being expelled by the storm of the Reformation. His most famous works are: "Vita Jesu Christi" (Antwerp, 1578) and "Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum" (Cologne, 1590).
