NED BUNTLINE (March 20, 1821 July 16, 1886). Buntline, whose real name was Edward Zane Carroll Judson Sr., was an American publisher, journalist, and writer.JAMES GORDON BENNETT (1795-1872). Bennett was the publisher of The New York Herald.ALS. 2pg. October 5, 1849. Philadelphia. An autograph letter signed The Avenger addressed to Bennett. The anonymous author stated: Allow me to say that your insertions in The Herald concerning E.Z.C. Judson Esq, fully confirm the opinion that the Public have always had of you, viz: that you are a coward, a rascal and a liar. Mr. Judson and you, have, since the commencement of his Own, been on very unfriendly terms, in consequence of his denouncing you, justly, as an infamous character. And now, as the people have been deceived, as regards the Riot, by such papers as The Herald and The Sun and Mr. Judson confined as a common felon you grasp with eagerness at this most favorably opportunity of venting your spleen on an honest and injured man. And, sir, if you dare to publish another word unfavorable to him (Judson) I, as an American, (and altho I have never seen Mr. Judson) will take the matter in hand, visit New York and punish you myself. The people would not interfere, for they, or the majority of them, are against youIn future, when The Herald is deficient in matter, you will just fill up with something truthful, and not with comments upon the character of Mr. Judson or, believe me I will keep my word at all hazards. On May 10, 1849, there was a riot between immigrants and nativists in Manhattan; approximately two dozen were left dead. Buntline was blamed for the Astor Place Riot because of some handbills he printed ahead of time. The letter has spotting throughout.
