U THANT (1909-1974). Thant, a Burmese diplomat, was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961 to 1971.TLS. 1pg. 8 x 11. July 30, 1968. New York. A typed letter signed U Thant on The Secretary-General letterhead. He wrote to Patricia Levine: I thank you for your letter of July 19 regarding your projected publication of a book entitled The Anatomy of Greatness. Because of my very pressing official duties I am afraid I shall not be able to do justice to your queries, but perhaps the following answer may meet with your requirements. 1. The person who has exercised the greatest influence upon me was Buddha. 2. Some of the reasons for my selection are set out in my statement made by me in Toronto, Canada, on the 22nd October 1967. The texts that statement is enclosed. The Thant letter is accompanied by his 1967 statement. The letter has a staple in the upper left corner and is in very fine condition.
