Signed by translator and author of the introduction - Dr. Henry Sigerist, then Professor of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. Nicolas Maurice Arthus (1862 - 1945) was a French immunologist, physiologist, and educator, best known for his work on anaphylaxis and on snake venom. His present work is said to have "epitomized the full spirit of research" in just a few pages, by outlining the principles of all experimental methods: "Observe facts, conceive a hypothesis, determine its value through experiments . . . give the interpretation . . . and ascertain the excellence of this interpretation through strict criticism..."
