ß Three works on algae published between 1879 and 1920, all inscribed by the author or from one botanist to another, the collection illustrating the collegiality of American and German botanists.

1) Engler, Adolf and Karl Prantl. Die nat¸rlichen Pflanzenfamilien - nebst ihren Gattungen und wichtigeren Arten insbesondere den Nutzpflanzen. 236 und 237 Lieferung. Conjugatae und Chlorophycceae. Leipzig: Verlag von Wilhelm Englemann, 1909. 8vo, 144 pp. Single part bound in gray card boards with blue cloth spine, upper wrapper mounted to upper board, age toned and a little edgeworn but very good.

ß Inscribed by Engler to the American botanist Gilbert Morgan Smith (1885-1959): "Herr Prof. Gilbert M. Smith, freundschaftlich der Verf." Smith began his career at the University of Wisconsin, specializing primarily in algaes. He was later Professor of Botany at Stanford from 1925 to 1950. This single part from Engler and Prantl's important work of taxonomy focuses on two classes of green algae.

Half pebbled brown cloth and marbled paper sides, backstrip lettered in gilt. Boards rubbed, cloth frayed at backstrip ends. Bookplate.

ß Inscribed by Nathil. C Rush to George James Peirce. Bookplate of Peirce on front pastedown. Peirce was a professor of botany at Stanford from 1897-1933.

3) [Wittrock] Klebs, Georg. Ueber die Formen einiger Gattungen der Desmidiaceen Ostpreussens. [On the forms of some genera of the Desmidiacea of

East Prussia. An inaugural dissertation for Kaiser Wilhelms University Strassburg]. Konigsberg, 1879. 8vo, 42 pp. plus one illustrated plate with key. Black cloth boards, gray cloth backstrip lettered in gilt, plain endpapers. Contents age-toned, binding lightly worn.

ß Klebs' dissertation on freshwater green algae from the library of Veit Brecher Wittrock (1839-1914), the Swedish botanist, with his exlibris stamp and a clipped inscription to Professor Wittrock from "the author" on the front free endpaper.
