1931. TOLMER, A. Mis En Page: The Theory and Practice of Lay-Out. [117] pp., with 16 full-page photomontages and illustrations. 4to, 264 x 212., bound in original decorated boards with matching slipcase. London The Studio, 1931. A brilliant work using all the elements of design and layout which were, in 1931, considered avant-garde. With 16 tipped-in illustrations, some of which are photomontages utilizing metallic paper, linoleum, colour-printing, embossing and pochoir. The text is an expertly written guide to layout, profusely illustrated and printed in blue and black. "In 1930, Alfred Tolmer began to write his definitive treatise on graphic design, entitled Mise en Page: The Theory and Practice of Layout, which continues to be consulted today, if only for the inspirational techniques of collage, pochoir, and coated papers. He published a French language edition himself and an English language edition with The Studio magazine, which was printed in London and includes the French text at the back" (Julie Mellby, Graphic Arts, Princeton Exhibition, May 2008). An unusually fine copy, still with the extremely rare slipcase.
