Cambridge: Printed at the University Press, by Hilliard and Metcalf, 1823. iv, 84, [2] pp, with ownership signature of "G. Bemis, Cambridge 1834." Learned manuscript annotations on previously blank leaf following page 84, and in some blank margins. Original printed wrappers, untrimmed, couple of closed blank margin tears. Very Good.

This is the first edition of Ticknor's first book. Ticknor lists 251 numbered paragraphs of citations, titles of the numerous works supporting his lectures in Spanish literature.
Ticknor's prefatory remarks explain that the "subject to which they are devoted is, in many respects, new in Europe; and, in this country, is quite untouched. The Spaniards themselves have no work of history or criticism embracing the whole of their literature, or even its best portions; and in England, and in Italy, nothing has been done to assist them."
He thus offers the apparent first study of Spanish literature published in America.
