New York: Random House, 1958 Illustrated by Dr. Seuss. First edition, first printing with 1950, 1951, and 1958 dates to copyright page; first issue dust jacket with 295/295 price to front jacket flap and fourteen Dr. Seuss titles to rear panel. Publisher's green pictorial paper-covered boards with an illustration of stacked turtles to front board, lettered in blue, white, and black, and pictorial endpapers; in the original matching pictorial dust jacket. Near fine book, with very clean and bright boards, light rubbing to spine ends and bottom edges of boards, a bit of mold along top margins of pastedowns, and hinges starting but sturdy; very good unclipped dust jacket, with some wear to spine ends, some soiling along flap folds and spine ends, and light scratching to rear panel. Overall, a great copy. From B&B: In the classic titular story, Yertle the Turtle is king of a small pond "on the far-away Island of Sala-ma-Sond." Desirous of a larger kingdom and believing that he is king of all that he sees, Yertle commands his turtles to stack on top of one another to create a throne for himself. He continues to build up his throne until Mack, an unhappy turtle at the base of the stack, burps and the entire stack falls, leaving Yertle with a new title: "King of the Mud." In addition to "Yertle the Turtle," decidedly one of Dr. Seuss's more overtly political stories, the book includes the stories "Gertude McFuzz" and "The Big Brag.". First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Dr. Seuss.
