His first and most famous book, which was not a great success when it first came out but went on to became a bestseller and, by the early 1960's, was required reading in many schools and colleges. On many lists of the best novels 20th century including the Modern Library's Best 100. Basis for the 1963 British movie directed by Peter Brook and 1990 American one directed by Harry Hook. Very good with small stain to upper rear board, light crimp in spine, and few light splashes to front board; in near fine, 2nd issue or impression dust jacket showing only minor wear to edges and slight toning to spine.
