Baden-Baden: Staatsliche Kunsthalle, [1962]. First Edition. Original lithographed poster, with text offset printed in black on white stock, measuring 61cm x 85.75cm (24" x 33.75"). A dozen or so foxed spots on verso, else very Near Fine, unbacked and unrestored.

Striking typographic poster designed by Shahn for the opening of an exhibition of his work at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden in August, 1962. "According to his wife Bernarda, Shahn often printed proofs on whatever paper was closest at hand. In this poster, newsprint became a part of the design, whether or not this was the original intent. The newspaper is a double-page spread (truncated) of a New York Times want ad section, but there does not seem to be any special significance attached to the choice...The quotation is from Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti and was also issued as a separate serigraph, Immortal Words" (Prescott, The Complete Works of Ben Shahn 176). 82911.
