"Phil Andros" was the name Samuel Steward used when he began writing gay pornographic novels in the late 1960s. Stud was the first, published in 1966 after a Supreme Court ruling restricted the power of obscenity laws. Steward, entering his third career after spending a few decades as an English professor and tattoo artist, had previously been limited to publishing in European gay magazines.
