Ithaca, (NY): Moosewood; [printed by Glad Day Press], 1974. Comb-bound quarto (28 x 22 cm.), 79 pages. Illustrated. Second Printing of the original self-published edition of this classic of counterculture cooking. The Moosewood Cookbook was published in a trade edition by Ten Speed Press in 1977 with significant expansion and revisions from these earlier works and went on to become one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time. The restaurant opened in 1973, originally as a worker's collective, and has been honored as one of the thirteen most influential restaurants of the 20th century by Bon Appetit and received a James Beard Foundation "American Classic" award. This earlier edition was compiled by and credited to the collective, with Mollie Katzen – who would go on to be credited as the author of the trade edition – given credit here for "design, editing, handwriting, pen and ink illustrations". It is the first to contain illustrations, including the iconic moose, and is distinct in a number of ways from the first printing, notably in that the leaves are printed one side only, and that the copyright notice states, "Copyright 1974, Moosewood collective". Tiny spot to front panel of the decorated wrapper; publisher's dark brown plastic comb binding is complete. The original self-published issues are very scarce, doubly so in this condition.
