By [BARBAULD, Mrs. Anna Leticia]
New York: McLoughlin Bros, 1870. [JUVENILE] [POETRY] [RELIGION]. 12mo (7 1/2" x 6"); 32pp; stiff wrapper, chromolithographed pictorial front featuring a pastoral scene with three children framed by a vine, the series and title above the scene, small publisher applied brown label to front; rear wrapper features an angel and the series title and publisher; 3 staple binding; ownership in pencil on verso front wrapper "St. Johns S.S."; several small partial stamps with a name (?); hymn number and text presented within double-line borders, 16 small engraved illustrations, some signed "Schlapp, sc." or "Cogger, sc."; creasing to wrapper, some corners folded, wrapper lightly hand soiled; very good. Scarce. OCLC locates 2 copies. The 14 numbered hymns in this small children's book are presented as poems of praise to God and not as songs. Lovely engraved illustrations, some signed "Schlapp" perhaps referring to Henry Schlapp; others are signed "Cogger" referring to Edward P. Cogger. No credit is given for the illustrations, but a similar smaller copy at the American Antiquarian Society's copy gives credit to Henry Walker Herrick. The copy held at AAS measures 17cm, smaller than this copy. The AAS copy also has a printed price and a publisher's advertisement. (AAS 214253).
