Salt Lake City, 1900. 2 pages (front and back) [20 cm x 12 cm] / [8" x 5"] In this letter Young is seeking the whereabouts of a collection of books he purchased in New York City. "Salt Lake City - Utah. Oct. 29, 1900. Miss Tice Lynch 45 Williams St. New York. Gentleman: You should have his parcels of books for me, sent from Maggs Bros, 159 Chamberlain St. Pond Green, London. Will you kindly send them to Bangs + Co. 91 Fifth Avenue and mark them 'To be included with R.B. Shepard's books for shipment to Salt Lake City.' Advise me of any + hence you may be at in sending them to Messrs. Bangs + Co. I shall be glad to remit. Yours very respectfully Alfales Young."
An excellent letter that connects three legendary book shops: Maggs (London), Bangs (New York), and Shephard (Salt Lake City) with Brigham Young's family. Alfales Young (1853-1920) was the only son of Brigham Young and Eliza Burgess. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and practiced in Salt Lake. He also worked as the telegraph editor for the Salt Lake Herald and the Deseret News, and was a noted book collector and reader, and was active for many years in the Wasatch Literary Association.
