Vienna, 1817. Wilhelm was a natural history writer, best known for his monumental "Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte" (Conversations on Natural History), originally issued in weekly instalments, with hand colored illustrations, and ultimately amounting to 27 fat volumes noted for their gem like colored engravings. This is volume VIII of that series, dealing with mammals such as horses, cows, and elephants, and also some marine mammals. The final 35 plates deal with seals, whales and their fisheries. These include industrial scenes of fishing, storing, and rendering blubber and other byproducts. Bound in period half sheep with spine labels over marbled boards.. 18.5 cm.
