Adrian, [Michigan]: printed for the author by A. W. Maddocks, 1843. First edition, 12mo, pp. 216; contemporary brown muslin; endpapers foxed; text clean; early ownership signature of H. S. McCallum. The book reached a third edition by 1858. This first edition was published "in an obscure western village, under very disadvantageous and embarrassing circumstances . . . the whole edition of 2000 copies was sold in the back woods of the western country" (Wood). The author, who in 1858 was professor of natural sciences in Burlington University, Iowa, claims his theory is entirely his own.
