Originally published in 1938 in order to "raise the confidence of French Jews in light of the violent anti-Semitic campaign that was going on in pre-WWII France," Rabbi Kaplan's work was on the Otto list of forbidden books, and pconfiscated under the Occupation.
About the author: Rabbi Jacob Kaplan (1895-1994) was a central figure both in Jewish consistory and in French society. Not only did he offer surprising scholarship, but he was able to show courage during the dark period of Nazi-occupied France. In 2005 France recognized his contribution to society by issuing a stamp with his portrait.
