1789. TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE. Edo sichu onari no fushi keibi no zu. Edo inspection security map. Coloured manuscript map, 115 x 41 cm (map), mounted onto a hanging scroll, housed in a wooden box. Edo: n.p., [1789-1818]. This beautifully drawn map was apparently created mainly as a security map for the Tokugawa shogun when he went out for falconry. Zojiji Temple, the family temple of the Tokugawa family, is depicted in large size at the top of the map. Below are the Oji Kinrinji Temple and the Nippori Jokoji Temple, which were the resting places of the Tokugawa shogun's family. Below, the map depicts about 26 security points in central Edo and its suburbs.
