First edition of this early Inchbald romp, a two-act farce in which a precious shawl goes missing and nearly every member of the cast is, at one point or another, accused of being the thief. Inchbald's third play after the triumph's of MOGUL TALE and I'LL TELL YOU WHAT, APPEARANCE was in fact turned down by George Colman Sr., the Haymarket manager who had accepted her first two plays. Inchbald turned around and sold it to Thomas Harris at Covent Garden, the beginning of a productive relationship that ensured Inchbald's plays did not get tied to a single theater.
