ELEGANTLY DECORATIVE BLIND-STAMPED RED MOROCCO BY RENÉ KIEFFER (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with elaborate frame containing palm fronds and lilies, an urn of thistles at center, raised bands, central spine panel with blind-stamped palm ornament, two panels above and below it lettered in blind, SATIN PASTEDOWNS WITH A PROOF ENGRAVING BY BRUYER printed in sanguine at center, the surrounding material with a repeated motif of a (rather (truncated) sweet and charming) fire-breathing dragon, multi-color striped silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, top edge gilt. Original printed vellum wrappers bound in. Housed in a fleece-lined matching morocco-lipped slipcase. With numerous woodcuts (at least two or three per page) printed in black, green, and sanguine, and 20 ETCHINGS BY GEORGES BRUYER IN COLOR. With sheet conveying the offer of René Kieffer to provide the satin proofs to be used as pastedowns (as here) to those customers who commissioned him to bind the work bound in at rear. Carteret IV, 266. Occasional minor foxing (prominent on a couple of blank pages), light offsetting from illustrations, otherwise quite a fine copy. with the binding very lustrous and showing virtually no signs of use.

Complete with special proofs on satin, this bibliophile's edition of Renaissance verse is filled with lush illustrations and offered in a beautifully preserved Art Nouveau binding. Clément Marot (1496-1544) was the leading French poet of his day. Drawing on Classical forms, his verses were very influential for the next generations of poets, particularly in England, where they helped inspire Spenser's "Eclogues." Our edition of the text was printed as a joint venture between publisher/bookseller Auguste Blaizot and the binder René Kieffer, and is accompanied by the illustrations of Georges Bruyer. Working primarily in wood-engravings and aquatints, Bruyer (1883-1962) is best known for his emotionally charged prints following his service in the First World War. He also illustrated several books throughout his career, including famous works by Shakespeare and Molière. Binder René Kieffer (1875-1963) was in the first class of students to graduate from the École Étienne, where he concentrated on becoming a doreur, learning to tool gold designs in the well-established style. After leaving school, he worked for Chambolle-Duru until 1898, when he established his own studio. According to Duncan & De Bartha, he "became a disciple of Marius Michel, moving gradually away from his traditional training towards a more emblematic and modern style." He would become one of the most innovative and progressive binders in Paris in the 20th century. This binding, in glossy red morocco, has been remarkably well cared for, and looks much as it would have when Kiefer put it in its case.. (Inventory #: ST20211)
