The Ellora Caves consist of 34 temples and monasteries carved side by side from the 6th to 12th centuries into the walls of a cliff close to Aurangabad, a city of over a million, in India's Maharashtra State. The 12 earliest (5th-8th century) caves are Buddhist. The next 17 caves (7th-10th century) are Hindu (Brahmanical (truncated) according to UNESCO). The final 5 (9th to 12th century) reflect Jainism.
