Twelve Amusing Hand Colored Lithographs

Folio (13 3/4 x 10 inches; 350 x 254 mm.). Twelve superb hand colored lithograph plates all heightened with gum arabic. All plates mounted on stubs.

Mid nineteenth century quarter red straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, smooth spine lettered horizontally in gilt. Small stain on slightly faded spine.

The hand-colored lithographs humorously depict various aspects of travel and travelers of the early-to-mid (truncated) nineteenth century.

Rare: The Paris Musées collection has just two of the plates.

"One of his notable series is "L'École des Voyageurs" (The School of Travelers), published in Paris by Dupin & Cie around 1839. The series is considered rare, with first editions featuring hand-colored prints."

Frédéric Bouchot (1798-1860) was one of the leading French lithographic caricaturists and illustrators of his time. Renowned for his satirical works, he was a regular contributor to Le Charivari, La Caricature and the Journal pour Rire, and a regular collaborator with Daumier and Gavarni on comical albums.

We have only seen this title once before in 2002 (private collection in US).
