Archive Documenting the Commission and the October 1972 Unveiling of Jean Dubuffet's "Group of Four Trees" in Front of 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza in New York

1972. Portfolio. Near Fine. A wonderful chronicling --through photos, letters and documents-- of the commission and the 1972 unveiling (both overseen by David Rockefeller, the CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank) of "Group of Four Trees", the first monumental sculpture specifically intended for the United States created by the great French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985). The portfolio includes: various original photographs of Jean Dubuffet and David Rickefeller (and his assistant Joseph Verner Reed, who would soon become the Under-Secretary General of the United Nations), either at Dubuffet's studio in France during the construction of "Group (truncated) of Four Trees" or in more formal poses in front of the sculture in New York; signed letters (a TLS from Dubuffet including original snap shots attached, and an ALS from David Rockefeller to Joseph Verner Reed); The Chase Manhattan "Release" introducing the sculpture to the Chase community, an in-house biography of David Rockefeller, an in-house essay on Chase Manhattan's nascent art program and catalogues of both Jean Dubuffet himself and specifically "Group of Four Trees". All the separate pieces are clean and bright and in crisp, Near Fine condition. All housed in their russet cloth chemise and matching russet slipcase (with leather title label along the spine). A very impressive documentation of corporate art collecting at the highest level, with both Jean Dubuffet and David Rockefeller as the 2 towering principals in this particular instance.
