San Francisco: Samuel Levinson, 1915. Hardcover. Very good +/good. Corbett, Bertha. Octavo size, 99 pp., in dust jacket. "What We Saw at Madame World's Fair" is the story of two sisters at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. This world's fair was held in San Francisco, California, and featured such dazzling attractions as the Tower of Jewels, the Fountain of Energy, and the Palace of Fine Arts, along with many others, which are described from the sisters' perspective in the book, in the form of letters they write back home. This volume provides a charming view of the fair told in the endearing voice of the sisters Jane and Ellen, accompanied by photographs of the fair, tipped in, with added colour.
Included also are lovely black line drawings, and endpaper drawings, by Bertha Corbett, illustrator of the widely popular "Sunbonnet Babies" books; Corbett brings a tangible joy to the story with her depictions of the sisters and their encounters at the world fair.
___DESCRIPTION: Full rose paper, title and ruled border in gilt with coloured photograph of the Tower of Jewels on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, endpapers with light green illustrations by Bertha Corbett, a few signatures unopened, frontispiece a coloured photograph of a statue with the name "Wild Flower", eight tipped-in coloured photographs of attractions at the fair throughout, black line drawings by Corbett throughout; octavo size (9 1/2" by 7 1/4"), pagination: [i-ii] iii [iv] v-vii [viii] 1-86. In a pictorial dust jacket with title in black on the front and back panel, and identical descriptions of the book on the front and back flaps with the original price (which is also printed on the spine).
