London: Herman Moll, 1723. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Sheet measures 9" x 7 3/4".
This fascinating 1723 map of North America and South America by Herman Moll is rich in speculative cartography from the time. The map covers from the Hudson Straits south as far as Tierra del Fuego. Although it features the speculative mapping of New Zealand, and the mapping of Lake Parima and Xarayes in South America, perhaps the most prominent speculation is the presentation of California as an island. This edition has unique pink and blue hand coloring.
Insular California was first mentioned in the early 16th century. Although contrary (truncated)
