Prince Igor, in a prologue and four acts after a scenario by V.V. Stasov, was first performed in St. Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre on 23 October/4 November 1890.

The opera, considered Borodin's greatest work, was unfinished at the time of his death; it was edited and completed by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov.

"An extraordinary work created in nearly impossible conditions, Prince Igor clings to a place at the edge of the repertory owing to Borodin's skill in realizing the 'song and cantilena' to which, by his own confession, he was drawn." Robert W. Oldani in Grove Music Online.
