Staple-bound into publisher's brown paper folder with buff label with typewritten text affixed to front cover. Near Fine with faint tidemark to front cover, small closed tear at left bottom corner of front cover mended with tape at verso. Two printings were prepared in early 1936 by H. C. Koenig; the first in the form of a letter (of which likely less than 25 copies were (truncated) printed), and the second, this, with minor textual changes published as an essay of which an estimated 30-50 copies prepared. This copy lacks the two leaves of errata laid into a few copies. Lovecraft's travelogue of Charleston, South Carolina, written after an extensive exploration of the eastern seaboard. Included is an itinerary of principle sites, detailed excerpts of cross streets, and geographical ordinances. "Issuing forth to observe his environment, the stranger cannot but note the civilized and distinctive atmosphere of the city around him. The pace of life is sensible and leisurely and there is no needless noise or bustle or excitement." The horror author held a strong affection for the southern city. Currey, p. 326. Joshi I-A-9.
