1976. [LGBTQ][Feminist] Archive of three issues of Boston-based LGBTQ feminist newspaper The Gay Weekly, 1976. Three issues, newsprint, saddle-stapled. Illustrated with halftone photography, original artwork, and period advertisements. All issues published in Boston and printed by the Gay Community News Collective. A scarce trio of issues from The Gay Weekly, a lesser-known but highly engaged offshoot of Gay Community News (GCN), offering a rare window into queer, feminist, and leftist organizing during the summer of America's Bicentennial. Though short-lived and rarely held institutionally, The Gay Weekly served as a vital supplement to Boston's LGBTQ+ media landscape in the mid-1970s, emphasizing lesbian politics, racial justice, and labor solidarity. Across these three consecutive issues from July 1976, contributors highlight Black lesbian activism, independent queer musicianship, and gay labor struggles, articulating a broad vision of sexual liberation rooted in coalitional politics. Archive includes:

[1] Vol. 4, No. 3 (July 17, 1976). "The Schoolteacher Steps Out." A cover story on a closeted lesbian teacher's decision to come out, set alongside national organizing updates, including legal battles for gay pilots and prisoners. Interior pages also feature the "Speaking Out!" column by Carol David and Gay Community News financial transparency reports.

[2] Vol. 4, No. 4 (July 24, 1976). "Flo at NY Demo." Features civil rights attorney and Black feminist Flo Kennedy at the Democratic National Convention. Includes coverage of lesbian protests against Cardinal Krol in Philadelphia, the battle to keep Bay Village gay bars open in Boston, and reports on international gay and feminist movements.

[3] Vol. 4, No. 5 (July 31, 1976). "Their Album Comes Out." A profile of Jade and Sarsaparilla, a lesbian folk duo emblematic of the feminist cultural renaissance. Includes news of Leonard Matlovich's court defeat, Democratic Party platform fights for gay inclusion, and extensive commentary on Kitty Cotter's life and activism.

Each issue blends national headlines with hyper-local reporting from Boston and the Northeast, giving voice to working-class, feminist, and nonwhite queer communities often marginalized by both mainstream and gay male-centric media. Regular features include editorial columns, community letters, entertainment reviews, and classified ads. The tone is unapologetically radical, reflecting the leftist roots of its editorial collective and their commitment to inclusive queer liberation. Edges uniformly toned with some shallow chipping and closed tears to margins; paper uniformly brittle but all text and images fully legible. A newspaper documenting 1970s intersectional queer print culture, elevating the voices of lesbians, Black radicals, and working-class LGBTQ+ organizers during a critical juncture in U.S. gay liberation history.
