Carrie Snyder, a sex worker in a Louisiana steamboat town, takes a pair of youths, Paul and Lady, under her wing and acts as their "make-believe Mother," eventually moving to New York and accomplishing, and suffering, more than they ever thought possible. Basis for the Oscar-nominated 1936 film of the same name.
