by Tucker, Rev. H. W.
London: William Wells Gardner, 1879. George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878) was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. He was consecrated in 1841 and left for his new missionary diocese in the same year. He was Bishop of New Zealand (which included Melanesia) from 1841 to 1869. On a return trip to Britain in 1867, he accepted an offer to serve as Bishop of Lichfield. His new appointment began in 1868, and he returned to New Zealand to resign his old position in 1869. Selwyn served as Bishop of Lichfield until his death in 1878. After his death, Selwyn College, Cambridge and Selwyn College, Otago were founded to honor his life and contribution to scholarship and the church. This 2-volume memoir was undertaken by Reverend Tucker at the request of Selwyn's widow. According to the author, he has attempted to commemorate Selwyn primarily through Selwyn's own writing and the correspondence of others with Selwyn. Octavo. Gift binding from St. Augustine's College, Canterbury as an academic prize in 1889. Navy blue leather covers with gilt college seal and gilt border on front cover of both volumes. Gilt title on brown to spine of both volumes. Elaborate gilt decoration and raised bands to spines. Minor wear to edges of covers and to top and bottom of spines. Marbled edges to text blocks and marbled front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers. Text blocks are bright and clear. Two-page foldout insert, Conspectus of Creeds, in Volume II is slightly damaged, with one page bound upside-down and the other detached, but they appear to be complete. A very handsome copy. Volume I is 399 pages; Volume II is 393 pages. REL/060625.
