Classic map of New York City with a vertical orientation. Shows the island of Manhattan extending north to 116th St., and Brooklyn from the southern border of Prospect Park. Updated from previous editions to show increased development in Long Island City, including Hunter's Point, Ravenswood, and Astoria in Queens. An inset in the upper left shows a "Plan of the Northern Portion of the City of New York" featuring upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Part of downtown Jersey City, the Heights, and Hoboken are also depicted. Accurate coloring divided by fire districts (truncated) and wards, with labeled streets, parks, railroads, and ferry lines. A table in the lower right margin lists rail lines in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. After a map by G. W. Colton, 1865.

Ormando W. Gray was a map publisher active in the later half of the 19th century. A civilian engineer and surveyor, he worked with several other map publishers like Henry Walling and Colton. His state and county atlases are well known. Frank A. Gray, presumably a relative, produced many maps that were published by the family firm, O.W. Gray & Sons. (Inventory #: 328440)
