Hardcover
1925 · New York
by Lewis, Sinclair
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Very Good. 1925. 3rd and 4th printing (stated). Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a nice-looking facsimile reproduction of the first trade edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, light shelfwear only, previous owner's name and purchase details on front endpaper, 1925 gift inscription (in German) on half-title page, a few tiny bits of white paper adhered to rear cover]. Lewis's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (although he refused to accept the award) about the personal and professional travails of a dedicated scientist/doctor who also happens to be a bit of a womanizer. It was adapted for the 1931 film of the same name, directed by John Ford and starring Ronald Colman, which made the titular character a good deal more admirable as a person. An early printing ("Third and fourth printings, March 1925"), following the Second printing (which was the first trade edition) of January 1925, which itself was preceded by the first edition, a limited issue of 500 copies. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .
