Map of New York and Vicinity

This beautiful and scarce pocket map from 1862 depicts Manhattan in vertical orientation from 135th street to the Battery, with parts of New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Queens. An elaborate cartouche in the upper right corner features an interpretation of the New York City seal with a native American man, a colonial sailor, an eagle and a coat of arms. This map is incredibly detailed; all street names are labeled, as well as piers numbered, parks, asylums, and hospitals noted, ferry lines charted and (truncated) depth sounding marked in the Hudson and East rivers. Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island), Randall's Island, and Ward's Island appear on the map. Notably, the map depicts Olmsted and Vaux's Greensward plan of Central Park, although the park would not be officially complete until 1876. At the time of publication, the southern portion of the park was mostly complete and open to visitors. Hand coloring notates the city's numbered wards. Original case is present and in good condition; the map has been repaired along fold lines and has some discoloration but the overall image is clear.

Mathew Dripps (1812-1896) was a prominent cartographer remembered most for his maps of New York City. This beautifully composed map would be an outstanding addition to any collection or home. (Inventory #: 328587)
