Sentaro Egawa “Esen,” the artist who carved the woodblocks for these illustrations, was also the favored carver of the famed Japanese artist, Hokusai (1760-1849). These two carpentry manuals illustrated the details and proportions of traditional Japanese wood construction and carving. Originally printed in two 2-volume sets. This set is Volume 1/Number 1 and Volume 2/Number 2, of the original 4-volume set. Unpag. Oblong 12mo. Blue paper wraps, traditional Japanese binding with paper titles applied to each cover. Slight wear overall from age, clean within.
