This work describes the ancient Roman monuments found in Nimes, France, and is backed up with a second section on 'modern' monuments there. Among the structures of interest are the Hopital General, built in 1811, and the Maison Centrale de Detention, dating from ca. 1820. / Charles Oge Barbaroux worked at the royal court of Nimes in the south of France. The frontispiece for this volume includes a vignette of the Pont-du-Gard, the ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the first century AD to carry water over 50 km (31 mi) to the Roman colony of Nemausus (modern day Nimes). The text also gives a review of the Roman baths, near Fontaine. The author also describes the 'modern' gendarmerie at the ancient Porte d'Auguste, Nimes, restored in 1828. The Roman amphitheater at Nimes is still extant, here a plan for the structure is represented. Another section describes the Maison Carree which is an ancient Roman temple in Nimes, it is also one of the best-preserved Roman temples to survive in the territory of the former Roman Empire.
