Potsdam: Gustav Kiepenheuer, 1921. First edition (1. bis 3. Tausend). Hardcover. Very good condition. Quarto. 16pp. (text), [30]pp (plates), [2]pp. Original gray-green paper-covered boards, black lettering on cover. Frontispiece. Cream endpapers.
Remarkable publication documenting the work of the renowned Ukrainian sculptor. Associated with the cubist movement, Archipenko departed from the neo-classical sculpture of his time and used negative space to create a new way of looking at the human figure, showing a number of views of the subject simultaneously. Known for introducing sculptural voids, and for his inventive mixing of genres throughout his career: devising 'sculpto-paintings', and later experimenting with materials such as clear acrylic and terra cotta. This album contains 1 in-text and 32 full-page b/w photographic reproductions of the artist's sculptures, terra cotta, and paintings.
Text in German. Minor wear and sunning to edges. Minor age-toning along edges of block.
