Paris: Éditions Zoé Cristiani, 1990. First edition. Octavo (255 × 218 mm). Loose leaves in a folded printed cover, housed in a gray cloth publisher's folder with flaps and closing ties.
This is one of only 80 copies (no. 35), each signed by both the author, Scottish poet Kenneth White, and Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-Ki. All copies feature a full-page aquatint in black, printed by Lacourière, Paris.
This unique collaboration—Zao Wou-Ki's only known project with White—was completed in March 1990. Though the two had known each other earlier, White described initially resisting such collaborations, only changing his mind after a 1985 journey through northern Japan, following in the footsteps of 17th-century haiku master Basho. Inspired, he wrote to Zao Wou-Ki suggesting a book based on his haikus, emphasizing how the artist's gestural language could bring the poetry to life.
