This is a record of an annual meeting of the North Ohio Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the first independent Black denomination in the United States.

This book documents the 48th annual session and begins with a frontis portrait of its presiding bishop, William Henry Heard. Born into slavery, Heard served in the South Carolina Senate from 1876 to 1877, joined AME the following year and rose quickly through its ranks. He served as United States Ambassador to Liberia from 1895 to 1898, fought tirelessly for equality and died in 1937. Along with detailed minutes of daily conference activities, the book holds names and reports of officers and committees not limited to the women's Mite Missionary Society, Ministers Wives' Association, “Evangelists” and “State of the Church and Country.” It notes countless churches, members and donations, including “Contribution to Wilberforce,” and reports on Bishop Heard's trip overseas:

“When he reached Paris, he was subjected to no humiliation on the ground of color. There are no race distinctions there . . . The young people can improve their education by travel . . . [and] enjoy the experience of being treated like men and women.”

The last few pages hold tables of financial data, with every district, town and pastor in the conference listed.
