Santa Clara, California: The Santa Clara War Mothers, 1948. Very good. 11½” x 8¼” commercial scrapbook, embossed leather over boards with 45 newspaper clippings adhered to 14 pp. + 8 clippings and 4 magazine issues laid in and the last 10 pages are blank. Issues measure 11¾” x 8½” with stapled illustrated self-wrappers and 20 pp. each. Publication sequence: Vol. 25, Nos. 7 (Oct 1947), 8 (Nov 1947); Vol. 26, Nos. 8 (Nov 1948), 9 (Dec 1948). Album and all contents generally very good or better: issues with some light edge wear, scuffing, creasing and toning; one with a 2” tear to rear affecting one word of text.

This is a fantastic group of newspaper clippings and rare periodicals collected by a California chapter of the American War Mothers (AWM).

A nonprofit organization still in existence today, AWM is made up of mothers of men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces during times of war. The group was founded in 1917 and became incorporated through an act of Congress in 1925. Per their founding charter, AWM efforts focus on “world service,” “patriotic work” and aid for wounded soldiers.

The clippings in this scrapbook document the meetings, elections and achievements of AWM chapter #45, “organized in the early days of World War II” in Santa Clara, California, outside San Jose. They list new members and officers, report on bond rallies, hospital volunteer work, USO entertainment, other efforts and activities. A feature from the San Jose Mercury Herald has great photographic images of the “local matrons” “giving their time to work on the Civilian Defense Council” and a few clippings cover the 28th annual state convention, held in Sacramento.

Notably, the collection contains four issues of The American War Mother, “official publication” of AWM. These rare, photographically illustrated bulletins are packed with news, reporting on candidates for national office as well as the induction and endeavors of state and local chapters. They include notes on board meetings and conventions, detailed financial reports, tributes to deceased members, developments of volunteer projects and much more.

A great group of clippings and newsletters of a lesser-known women's service group. OCLC shows nine institutions with limited holdings of the magazine, and the possibility of these issues within bound volumes at only two.
