Miniature Manuscript Pustaha Concertina

  • Sumatra, Indonesia , 1850
Sumatra, Indonesia, 1850. Bone, to which the end pieces of the concertina, tree bark unadorned, is attached. Oblong, 31 by 49 cm. Ten panels made with tree bark, with text and illustrations on both side. Eight painted illustrations, and a dozen panels of text. Plus of course the two incised illustrations on the bone covers. Our Pustaha is shorter than most -- its size isn't conducive to elaborate laborious detail. And one can certainly find Pustaha's with more detail in the artwork. But compared to smaller Pustahas -- and all the ones we've seen a still a bit larger than our -- the paintings in ours hold their own. For one thing, the paintings aren't mere line drawings as more common.
