Miniature Brass Fragrance Bottle with Mounted Brass Plate with Brand Name Moet & Chandon Epernay

  • Epernay, France: Moet & Chandon, 1900
Epernay, France: Moet & Chandon, 1900. Very Good. A stunning miniature objet d'art -- a fragrance bottle made of brass and bearing the label of the famous French brand of champagne, Moet et Chandon, which is based Epernay. We assume this was something that the company used as a promotional novelty, quite possibly a freebie giveaway. We note that while it could function as a salt shaker, we think it would have been dysfunctional as such, at least as a portable object. Plus, we are unaware there is a pepper mill pair. The date is unknown, but almost certainly the turn-of-the-twentieth century. The bottle is 8 cm tall. The top screws off at the lower neck. And at the top of the cap are tiny holes to allow the aroma of the potpourri stuffed with to waft out to delight those in its vicinity. We think the use of brass for such a small item, and its actual functionality, qualify it for the adjective perhaps we ourselves have overused when it comes to miniature items, but here truly does apply: "exquisite". We can not be sure Moet & Chandon was the source of this, but who else could have had the incentive to put their name on it? There are some scratches, and some might want to polish it. That is a matter of taste. We like the patina and would not do a thing.
